* Sacrament of Healing
* Also known as Penance or Confession
Form: "I absolve you from your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen." (Prayer of Absolution)
Matter:
-Contrition
-The Confession of Sins (Venial and Mortal)
-The Ministers Words of Absolution
Minister: Bishop or Priest
Rite: During Reconciliation a few things happen. The recipient will either be seated facing the minister or behind a screen talking to the minister. The minister can either be a Priest or a Bishop. It is recommended that a person go to Confession at least once a month. Reconciliation forgives sin and reunifies us with the Church. The recipient states this opening statement. " Forgive me Father for I have sinned it has been ____ since my last confession." Then all of their sins they have committed since their last confession are said. The minister listens and then proceeds to saying the Prayer of Absolution. All the sins are then forgiven. The minister gives a Penance to the recipient to make up for the sins they have committed against God.
Reconciliation is offered on Saturday's starting at 4 pm at my parish...
My first experience with Reconciliation was before my First Communion. I was a little anxious because I didn't really know what to expect. I think I was expecting for the priest to judge me or yell, but it was nothing like that. The priest was understanding, he listened to my venial sins and then gave me my first Penance( one Hail Mary). I went back to the pew said my prayer and felt fresh and renewed. After that great experience, I'm glad to go to confession 2-3 times a year.
An Examination of Conscience is used as a guideline for someone that is about to receive the sacrament of Reconciliation. It is helpful because it brings to mind past thoughts or actions that are against God's laws. This guideline helps us identify how we have strayed from God and which sins are important to bring up at confession.
